BIO
Mike Capp is a painter and mixed-media artist based in the Pacific Northwest. Capps’ preferred mediums to work in are Acrylics, Oils, Watercolors, Charcoal, and Paper Collage. From an early age, Capp became inspired by watching his Dad draw, paint, and wood-carve wildlife and nature subjects. One of his earliest memories that helped foster his creativity and dreams of becoming an artist was his parents buying him a set of Child Craft books. Volume 13, titled "Look Again," featured a wide range of artists from various genres throughout art history. Capp developed a deep appreciation for many of these artists as a young child.
After attending Utah State University and graduating with a BS in Illustration, Mike Capps’ art career took off when he worked as a screenprint artist for apparel and as an illustrator for magazines and print.
From 1998 – 2005, Capp did a series of paintings inspired by the imaginative drawings of his two children, Tanner and Kyla. He would follow their lead and develop full works from where they left off.
From 2006 – 2013, Capps' paintings drifted towards a more pop-culture sensibility. A visual mash-up of his favorite childhood pop-culture superheroes, monsters, and robots in portrait and still-life settings.
Finally, Capps' current style (2019 – present) is a combination of Neo-Cubism and Expressionism. Blending his subject matter with geometric, abstract forms, and realistic elements. A majority of this work is inspired by the figure and pure abstraction. That being said, pop culture references and his children’s art influences still find a way to sneak into these pieces.
