ABOUT

My name is Mike Capp and I’m a painter/mixed media artist based in the Pacific Northwest. My preferred mediums to work in are Acrylics, Oils, Watercolors, Charcoal, and Paper Collage. Starting at an early age, I became inspired by watching my Dad draw, paint, and wood carve wildlife and nature subjects. One of my earliest memories that helped foster my creativity and dreams of becoming an artist, was my parents buying me a set of Child Craft books. Volume 13, titled "Look Again," featured a wide range of artists from various genres throughout art history. Many of these artists I developed a deep appreciation for as a young child.

After attending Utah State University and graduating with a BS in Illustration, my art career took off when I worked as a screen print artist for apparel and worked as an illustrator for magazines and print.

Over the years, my art approach has evolved into what it is today.

From 1998 – 2005, I did a series of paintings inspired by the imaginative drawings of my two children, Tanner and Kyla. I would follow their lead and develop full works of where they left off.

From 2006 – 2013, my paintings drifted towards more of a pop-culture sensibility. A visual mash-up of my favorite childhood pop-culture superheroes, monsters, and robots in portrait and still-life settings.

Finally, my current style (2019 – present) is a combination of Neo-Cubism and Expressionism. Blending my subject matter with geometric and abstract forms with realistic elements. A majority of this work is inspired by the figure and pure abstraction. That being said, pop culture references and my children’s art influences still find a way to sneak into these pieces as well.
